This article presents Dimitar Shishmanov’s views regarding the new role of the woman and the change in the way she is treated in the existing conservative society during the years 60s to 70s of the 19th century. He shares his opinion in his dramas, in a published brochure and in some lectures, and defends it in practice by his attitude towards his family, as well as in his forty-one letters to his wife, kept in his son’s (Prof. Ivan Shishmanov) archives.

Юлия Николова е доцент, доктор по филология, дългогодишен преподавател в Пловдивския университет „Паисий Хилендарски“ по история на българската възрожденска литература и български фолклор с културна антропология. Чела е лекции в Софийския университет „Св. Климент Охридски“, в Бургаския свободен университет, в АМТИИ-Пловдив и др. Водила е часове в магистърски курсове по литературна антропология в Пловдивския и в Софийския университет. Автор е на книгите „Сава Радулов“ (1989), „Възрожденски уроци“ (1993, 1996, 2003), „Записки по българска възрожденска литература“ (2004), „Достойно есть. Свищов през деветнадесетия век и първото десетилетие на ХХ век“ (2006, 2008, 2018), „Бащи и синове. Една клонка от свищовския Шишманов род (Димитър Ем. Шишманов, Иван Д. Шишманов, Димитър И. Шишманов) (2022). Съставител и съавтор е и в редица университетски издания. Има над 150 публикации в научната периодика.
